Mold Inspection

3 Signs of Carpet Mold

Everyone loves the feeling of plush, soft carpet under their toes. However, your carpeted rooms could be the source of mold growth in your home. Mold needs moisture, food, and oxygen to grow, and carpeted surfaces provide just the right conditions. Still, it can be difficult to spot carpet mold if you don’t have a trained eye or know the signs. So, here are some of the most common things to look for. If you spot any of these mold growth symptoms in your carpeted rooms, it’s time to call AccuSpect Inspections.

1. Discoloration

Carpet mold growth usually is not identifiable on the surface, but that doesn’t mean it’s not thriving deep within the fibers. One of the common signs of a mold problem in your carpet is discoloration. Carpet discoloration can happen for various reasons, including direct sunlight, spills, or just normal foot traffic. But if none of that is happening where you notice the fibers turning a different color, you likely have mold growing underneath.

2. Odor

Mold doesn’t just send harmful spores out into your home; it also gives off a foul or damp odor. If you’ve ever been inside a crawl space or damp basement, then you likely know the smell. As the mold grows and spreads, it releases gasses known as microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). These gasses are released throughout every stage of the mold growing process, so you’ve likely noticed an unpleasant odor for some time. So take a big whiff and then call for a mold inspection!

3. Damp Areas

Any damp spot has the potential to grow mold, especially if it’s not dried out right away. Even the smallest spill of water on the carpet can be enough for mold spores. That’s why it’s crucial you clean up any water that may get onto the carpet. However, if you notice dampness consistently, then your issue may be coming from below. Carpet dampness is a common issue for homes near bodies of water or those with basements. Ground saturation can cause water to seep up from below, providing just enough moisture for mold.
